The Trade: Jay Cutler To Chicago

The Trade: Bears send QB Kyle Orton, 2009 1st Round Pick and 3rd Round Pick, 2010 1st Round Pick to Broncos for QB Jay Cutler, 2009 5th Round Pick.

I have finally stopped jumping up and down after news of this trade approached my eyes at about 6:00 p.m. last night. Personally, I am ecstatic about this trade. I can't see how you can't be. You've got a guy who is 6-3, 230 pounds who has a rocket arm. There's a reason why he was so expensive to get. Let's look at some stats comparing QB's can we?

Last Bears QB who made the Pro Bowl: Jim McMahon 1985
Last Bears QB with a 25 TD Season: Erik Kramer 1995
Last Bears QB with a 4,000 YD Season: Never

Cutler in 2008: Made the Pro Bowl. 25 TD's. 4,526 YDS.

That's a pretty good comparison there. Now, there are many people who aren't happy for this trade. They say the Bears gave up way too much. But, really, how well have the Bears done in the 1st round of the draft?

Since 2000, when they picked a guy by the name of Brian Urlacher, here is what we see:

2001: David Terrell
2002: Marc Colombo
2003: Michael Haynes/Rex Grossman
2004: Tommie Harris
2005: Cedric Benson
2006: No Pick
2007: Greg Olson
2008: Chris Williams

With the exceptions of Harris, Olson, and waiting on Chris Williams, the rest were total busts. Now with Cutler, just turning 26 this month, you've finally got your franchise quarterback who has been compared to the likes of Elway. And the Bears know of the difficulty of finding a franchise QB.
Another thing to look at is Cutler's 17-20 career record. In his 20 losses, though, the Broncos D has given up an average 32.5 points a game. He is 13-1 when his Defense holds the opposing offense to 21 points or less. Now that the Bears D won't be on the field the entire game, their 4th quarter woes will hopefully disappear. They will no longer be dead tired come the end of the game, I believe they will return to one of the elite defensive squads in the league.
Some say the Bears have no offensive line! Well, they just signed 7-time Pro Bowler Orlando Pace, and another beast at tackle by the name of Kevin Shaffer. Some might also say, the Bears have no receivers! Well let's see here, Torry Holt is still a free agent, and good quarterbacks make good receivers. Look at Favre all those years in Green Bay, it didn't matter who they put out there to catch the ball, there was always someone who stepped up.
As my brother said "I'm not going to miss, them (the offense) going out, running two plays up the middle, then having to pass on third down. Now they can come out gunnin'" Once again, I can't wait till football season.
