"Arghhh, what else do I have to do to get out of San Diego?!"
Jake Peavy won a Cy Young, asked to be traded to one team, and his wishes were not answered this year. Just as Kevin Towers, the Padres GM said that a deal must be done by today, Cubs GM Jim Hendry walked up to him the morning of the meetings and told him that he "couldn't justify giving up what it would take to get Peavy right now". What would it take to get the 2007 NL Cy Young Winner? Well, with a 3rd team involved, it looks like the Cubs were asked to give up:

Mark Derosa- arguably the best all-around player in the game right now...well meaning being able to play multiple positions and still being able to hit the ball wherever he plays. The last 3 years (1 with the Rangers and 2 with the Cubs) he has belted 44 HR, had 233 RBI's, and a .291 average while on average playing 145 games each season. Oh yeah, he has also played 6 different positions on the field each year. He is a CHAMELEON! The only positions he hasn't played would be the vertical stripe- Catcher, Pitcher, Center Field. He is coming off his best season in regards to HR's with 21 and RBI's with 87.

Jason Marquis- a pitcher who has gotten a bad rap from everyone. Sure he is making more money than he should, but he isn't that bad of a 5th starter. His last two years ERA's have been 4.60 and 4.53. Sure he isn't Zambrano, or Harden, or Dempster, hell even Lilly last year, but really what fifth starter is going to give you what those four do? None. Is the answer. He is consistently inconsistent, and I wouldn't mind him leaving, but packaged with the rest of these players, I wouldn't of done it either Jim.

Felix Pie- once the highest prospect in the Cubs organization who has had trouble adjusting to the big league level. He has speed and a great arm and can play defense like nobody's business. But he has trouble with plate discipline. He was once labeled "the left handed Vladimir Guerrero". Sure he owns a career average of .223, but in 260 AB. That barely is half a season worth of a regular AB's. Give the guy a chance, he's 23 years old.

Josh Vitters- now I don't know much about Vitters, but he was the Cubs #1 pick in 2007, and was awarded the "Greatest Natural Hitter in the Nation" in high school. He plays 3rd base and is a top prospect. He's not 20 yet.
A lot to give up for one player. Yes I would've liked to see Peavy in Cubbie blue next year, but at the cost of this...it was just too much to do. I'm just glad the talks are over, and we don't have to hear about it everyday like the Brian Roberts to Cubs rumors last year. They didn't stop until after the season already started. It's nice to get some peace of mind for a while, as the Cubs look to addressing their main and seemingly only need: A left-handed hitting outfielder.
More to come...
