Matt's Picks Week 1

First off, I recommend checking out McCain and Obama's speeches at the Alfred E. Smith memorial dinner that is posted below if you haven't seen them yet. Now on to what I want to talk about.

From now on every Tuesday I am going to give you a sporting pick for Wednesday, Thursday, and so on. I will make the game be either a pivotal match-up or just an interesting one that could go either way. On Monday of the next week I will post telling you all about how right I was, and in the rare occasion that I pick wrong, we can go over that as well. Now lets make some picks! Those of you who are heavy gamblers, call your bookies now.

WEDNESDAY: World Series Game 5 Tampa Bay Rays vs. Philadelphia Phillies, started on Monday but has been delayed until, well... now. The score sits all even at the start of the 6th inning 2-2. The Phillies are ahead in the series 3-1 but I am going to pick Tampa Bay in this one to take it back to their home field. Why? because with only 4 innings left to play it won't be a game, but a sprint; and the Rays have all the speed. Rays take it 5-2

THURSDAY: New Orleans Hornets vs. Phoenix Suns in the Suns home opener. A tough match-up was split last year 2 games apiece and each team getting a win on the other teams home court. Former NBA MVP Steve Nash still leads a talented line-up including Shaquille O'Neal, but the skilled Canadian PG may be on the decline. While opposing Hornet PG Chris Paul looks to be a possible candidate for this seasons MVP and is doing nothing but getting better. Look for New Orleans to pick up a big win here in the seasons first high scoring affair, 117-106.

FRIDAY: Some High School football action in the great state of Indiana. Class 3A No. 7 Plymouth taking on the No. 3 Lowell Red Devils looks to be a prime-time sectional match-up. Although Lowell returns a lot of starters from their 07' State Runner-up team, some key losses in the offensive line and the determination of Plymouth gives the nod to the Rockies in a defensive thriller, 21-15.

SATURDAY: Who's ready for some foootbaallll??? college style. Such a big week including games that pit No. 1 Texas against No. 7 Texas Tech and Big Ten action Northwestern at No. 17 Minnesota my game of the week goes to the No. 8 Florida Gators in the Superdome taking on the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs. Gators will look to former Heisman Trophy winner QB Tim Tebow to take a big bite out of the dogs, but with Knowshon Moreno averaging over 100 yards rushing a game and that Bulldog home crowd the SEC win will go to Georgia 43-35.

SUNDAY: NFL Sunday will have one of the biggest rivalries currently in sports as the New England Patriots travel to Lucas Oil Stadium to take on the Indianapolis Colts. After a sore loss in Tennessee the Colts, injured and aging, look to be on the slumping end of their decades success. With no Tom Brady though the Patriots have proven to be vulnerable but still formidable with a solid offensive line and receiving crew. This one will be one hell of the game and the only deciding factor I can see is the home field advantage. Colts will win a close one, 31-29.

MONDAY: The Pittsburgh Steelers traveling to FedEx Field to take on the Washington Redskins. Many people are saw the Steelers headed to another Super Bowl after a 5-1 start but after a rough loss to the New York Giants last week everyone is wondering how they will respond. This one should be a great game as Clinton Portis continues to have what may end up being the best season of his career going against a solid Pittsburgh defense. I see a Redskin win 28-21.

I will post again on Monday after the Steelers 'Skins game ends, and then on Tuesday for week 2. Happy Gambling!

I'm gonna go ahead and throw in my 2 cents before your predictions start so you can't call me a cheater haha
Agree on wed, I think Philly will win the series but Tampa will take the wheel in game 5 IF Tampas bullpen throws strikes. If they give dickballs to Howard and Utely, it's game, set, match Philly.
Thurs...Not going to lie I don't watch NBA much but I like Nash. He's always been a class act and an oldschool hardball player. I'll take the Suns.
I'll skip Fri since theres about .02% of people reading the blog that care about IN high school football haha, not to mention I know nothing about it..

Sat. First off, I think Texas vs Tex Tech will be a much better game than anyone predicts. Texas will win but at half time the score will be close. In your game of the week, my gators vs the dogs, I gotta disagree man. Not just because UF is my team but because of the over confidence in GA. Lets not forget how well the "blackout" game worked out for the dogs a few weeks ago. In my opinion FL losing to Ole Miss was the best thing that could have happened to them because it happened early and it happened to someone out of their division. Now look at them, handled LSU 51-21 while GA beat LSU 52-38 and massacred KY 63-5. Say what you want about the wildcats but you still have to throw, catch, and run the ball well to put up 63 points in one game. 114 points in the last 2 games, 15 W's out of the last 18 matchups vs GA, and way too much speed for GA to stay strong the entire game. FL wins 45-35.
Sunday....you know I love the blue but they don't have it this year. With Sanders out, Addai out, and Peyton acting like he's never played the game before, they're likely to get embarrassed. IF the defense of the Colts plays as well as last week and Peyton takes off his skirt, they have a chance. After all star DB Rodney Harrison is out for the season and the Pats number one rusher is on the IR with a banged up knee. If the defense sits this one out, look for Kevin Faulk to be practicing his touchdown dances in the endzone. If the same D shows up that played the GB Packers, theres a chance they could make matt cassel look BETTER than Tom Brady. There's no doubt with all the injuries, the lineups are favorable of the Colts. The depth and experience (even with an injured Addai and Sanders) is much stronger than the Pats. Somethin about the offense isn't clicking though. Whether it's Peyton not being 100%, Marvin being too old, or Clark trying to catch passes with his helmit, something isn't there. There's no swagger, there's not hop in their step. But don't overlook the Pats being 15th in pass defense this year either and the Colts inconsistency on offense. If it were anywhere but in Lucas Oil Stadium it would be another long Sunday night for the Colts, however I think this one could easily go either way. I hope I'm wrong, but I have Colts losing a close one 21-19.

Obviously by saying Ole Miss is out of FL's division I meant they're in the west while FL and GA are both in the East....and I forgot Mon....I don't see the skins pulling a quick one on Pitt...while I thoroughly dislike the Steelers, good defense always beats good offense. With that being said if the Skins can put big Ben on his ass a few times each time they have the ball, the tables could turn quickly. Redskins pull out a last second W 31-30.
